The Breast Center of the Department of Gynaecology at Heidelberg University Hospital is one of the leading institutions for the diagnosis and treatment of breast diseases in Germany. It ranks among the largest certified breast centres nationwide. The close integration of medical excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and innovative research ensures comprehensive and individualised care at the highest level – from precise diagnostics and surgical and drug therapy to follow-up care and psychosocial support.
Certified since 2003 by the German Cancer Society and OnkoZert, the Breast Center stands for the highest quality standards in the care of patients with benign and malignant breast diseases. Treatment follows a holistic, patient-centred approach that employs state-of-the-art imaging techniques and prioritises breast-conserving surgical strategies. In addition to oncological safety, great emphasis is also placed on aesthetic aspects: reconstructive and oncoplastic procedures are integrated into therapy planning at an early stage.
A particular focus is placed on radiotherapy, which is carried out in close cooperation with the Department of Radiation Oncology and Radiotherapy and the Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Center (HIT), both part of Heidelberg University Hospital. As a result, breast cancer patients have access to a unique range of cutting-edge radiation therapies within Europe. The Breast Center Heidelberg combines top-level scientific expertise and advanced technology to provide an individually optimised treatment for every patient.
In conventional radiotherapy, highly advanced techniques such as intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), and respiratory gating are used. In addition, HIT offers the possibility of precision irradiation with protons or heavy ions. Through the combination of state-of-the-art technology, many years of experience, and interdisciplinary care, patients in Heidelberg receive radiotherapy of the highest international standard – effective against the tumour, gentle on the body, and tailored to each individual.
The Breast Center is closely linked with the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). Through these collaborations, patients benefit from access to the latest scientific insights and newly developed therapeutic approaches as part of national and international clinical studies. Participation in clinical trials offers individualised treatment options, particularly for complex or advanced disease courses, extending beyond current therapy standards.
The centre is led by an interdisciplinary team of experienced specialists with expertise in senology (breast medicine), plastic and reconstructive surgery, and medical oncology. The commitment to providing each patient with individual and comprehensive care shapes everyday clinical practice, as does the continuous further development of the medical services offered. Special attention is given to patients with a genetically increased risk of breast cancer – here, comprehensive counselling, targeted diagnostics, and, where appropriate, preventive surgical measures are a key focus.
The Breast Center of the Department of Gynaecology at Heidelberg University Hospital sees itself as a place of medical excellence and human support. In all phases of the disease – from diagnosis to treatment and follow-up – the best possible care and personal guidance for each patient are paramount. In close coordination with all involved disciplines, the centre pursues the goal of treating breast cancer not only with medical excellence but also with empathy and a holistic approach.
