When a parent is diagnosed with breast cancer, the entire family is affected – especially the children. Suddenly, fears, insecurities, and many questions arise: What is happening to Mom? Am I allowed to feel sad or angry? How much should I know?
To help children cope with this difficult life situation, the Breast Center Bergstraße (BZB) at Bergstraße District Hospital offers a therapeutic children’s group. In a safe environment and under the guidance of an experienced child and adolescent psychologist, children aged 6–12 have the opportunity to express their feelings, ask questions, and learn with other affected children how to handle the situation.
The aim is to strengthen the children’s emotional resilience and help them discover their own resources. Through play and creativity, they are shown ways to stabilize themselves – without being overwhelmed or feeling responsible.
In cooperation with Vitos child and adolescent psychiatric outpatient clinic Heppenheim, this program is offered regularly and free of charge. The therapeutic children’s group is therefore a valuable component in the holistic care of breast cancer patients – because anyone who becomes ill needs the certainty that their whole family will be supported.
This program is not covered by health insurance but relies entirely on donations. With your support, we can continue this important project and help affected children find support, orientation, and new strength.
